For many of us, coffee is more than a quick source of energy. It is the warmth of a favorite mug between our hands, the aroma that fills the kitchen, and a small daily ritual that invites us to slow down before the day begins.
Now, new research is giving coffee lovers another reason to be curious about what may be happening inside the body when coffee is part of an everyday routine.
A 2026 study from the University of Oulu in Finland examined habitual coffee consumption among 2,264 adults, all age 46, who were participating in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. The researchers looked at coffee intake alongside body composition, metabolic markers, circulating amino acids, and sex hormones.
The results were intriguing: people who drank more coffee tended to have less total body fat and visceral fat, along with greater skeletal muscle mass, than those who drank less. These differences appeared even though the groups had similar body mass index measurements.
Looking Beyond the Number on the Scale
One of the most interesting parts of the study is that BMI alone did not reveal the differences researchers observed.
BMI is a general calculation based on height and weight, but it does not distinguish between fat and muscle or show where body fat is stored. Body composition offers a more detailed picture. Visceral fat—the fat stored around internal organs—is of particular interest because higher amounts have been associated with increased cardiometabolic risk.
In this study, higher coffee intake was associated with both lower visceral fat and more skeletal muscle. That does not mean coffee created those differences, but it does suggest that coffee habits may be connected to metabolic health in ways a scale cannot capture.
Coffee and Metabolic Markers
Researchers also found that participants who drank more coffee had lower circulating levels of branched-chain amino acids, often shortened to BCAAs.
BCAAs are essential nutrients the body uses for many purposes, including muscle protein synthesis. However, persistently elevated levels in the bloodstream have also been associated in previous research with insulin resistance and a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Among the men in the study, higher coffee consumption was also linked to a more favorable glucose-insulin profile. Researchers found hormone-related differences in both men and women, although the patterns were not identical between the sexes and were more extensive among men.
These findings may eventually help scientists better understand why earlier research has repeatedly connected coffee consumption with certain favorable health outcomes. For now, the biological mechanisms are still being investigated.
What the Study Does—and Does Not—Tell Us
This was an observational study. It identified relationships between coffee habits and health measurements, but it cannot prove that drinking coffee caused the differences.
Coffee drinkers may differ from non-coffee drinkers in other ways, including diet, activity, sleep, work patterns, and daily routines. The researchers adjusted for BMI and lifestyle factors, but no observational study can remove every possible influence.
The participants were also the same age and came from a Finnish birth cohort. That makes the group useful for comparison, but it means the findings may not apply equally to every age, culture, or individual.
So, this is not a prescription to drink more coffee, and coffee should not be viewed as a weight-loss or muscle-building treatment. It is a promising piece of a much larger scientific puzzle.
A Thoughtful Place for Coffee in Everyday Life
The best way to enjoy coffee may still be the simplest: as part of a balanced life built around nourishing food, regular movement, restorative sleep, and moments of genuine rest.
How coffee affects you personally matters, too. Some people are sensitive to caffeine, and late-day coffee can interfere with sleep. Others may need to limit caffeine because of pregnancy, medications, anxiety, heart rhythm concerns, or guidance from a healthcare professional.
